It’s been a year and the honeymoon is over – T1D

It’s been a year and the honeymoon is over…but I’m in it for life!  It was 1 year ago today that I was diagnosed as a Type 1 Diabetic (T1D).  I was 49 years old when I received the news.  Talk about a a surprising diagnosis and a life changing day!!  I had never heard of an adult being diagnosed with juvenile diabetes but it happens.   You can read my original blog post to know more of the story but just suffice to say that it’s been a journey.  I received my insulin pump 6 months post diagnosis on my 50th birthday. It really was a gift as it gives me so much more control and flexibility on the tennis court.

The first year hasn’t been that bad.  As a matter of fact, many parents of child T1Ds report wondering if there was a misdiagnosis that first year.  My sugars were so easily managed that I often wondered the same thing!  But, all good things must come to an end and the honeymoon is OVER!

The “honeymoon” is a period of time that varies from each individual but your body still creates a tiny amount of insulin so you don’t have to be quite as strict and things just kind of work out.  (I’m sure my doctor wouldn’t approve of my explanation or lack of discipline but it’s just how it is when you have 4 kids and a busy life!)  Nonetheless, it’s sad to be leaving the honeymoon as this is when the going gets tough.  My initial A1C value was 10.1.  Through fairly rigid carbohydrate counting and careful administration of insulin, my A1C ran about 5.9 most of the year.  This involved at least 2,000 finger pricks, over 1,000 insulin shots plus almost 100 infusion set changes.   The last 3 weeks my finger pricks are frequently revealing elevated sugar levels which is a huge indicator that the honeymoon is over.  My A1C has risen to 6.4.  I strongly believe that with tighter management of my carbohydrate counting that I will continue to be a well managed diabetic. Gone are the days of a haphazard snack.  Everything must be included in the calculation.

Diabetes is a disease that is hard because there isn’t an exact science to the dosing.  Stress, exercise, sleep, among lots of other things, impact the way your body metabolizes sugar and therefore your insulin amounts can vary from day to day for the exact menu of food.  What works for one person won’t work for another and what works one day might not work the next.  T1D is one of the few diseases that you are given life saving medicine and told “Don’t take too much or you will die.  Don’t take too little or you will die.  Good luck”

I have an amazing doctor and team of nurses and a great support system but my point is that only the person living with the disease can manage it.  Just like most issues in life, you can’t wish them away.  You can’t fix it for someone else.  You can’t love it out of them!  They have to want it.  They have to live it.  They have to walk their walk.  It’s been a year.  The honey moon is over but I’m stuck with this for life.  The novelty has worn off and it’s kind of a drag to manage this disease 24/7 but it is what it is.  So, as with most things in life, I will meet the challenge head on.  T1D messed with the wrong girl.  I will not let this disease get the best of me!  (I will say it’s taking a toll on my skin but I’m combating the signs of aging with my amazing side biz and the #1 premium anti-aging skincare available in the US!

If you have a friend or family member with T1D, be supportive.  Ask questions.

Some of the frequent misconceptions:

Yes, we eat real sugar!

No, we didn’t do anything to cause this to happen.

No, diet and exercise won’t cure it.

Mostly, understand that we aren’t that different than you!  I still eat most everything I ate before but just with more moderation:)  We are praying for a cure and I’m super excited about the closed loop “artificial pancreas” that’s just been approved by the FDA! I’m already in the queue to get it when it’s released in the spring!  We are all praying that one day, Type ONE will be Type NONE!  Until then, if you see me reaching down the front of my shirt, I’m (probably) trying to find my pump!

I’m thankful for my friends and family for their unwavering concern and support!  I love you guys!!

Top 10 Healthy Skin Habits

I wish someone had given me the Top 10 Healthy Skin Habits list when I was growing up! Then I would have known more about skincare and protecting my (very fair) skin! The years of soccer and sunburn weren’t the best combination!

Here are the Top 10 Healthy Skin Habits that you should practice and share!

  1. Protect your skin from the sun. By far the best wrinkle cream on the market is UVA/UVB sunscreen!  The best wrinkle is the one you never get!
  2. Don’t smoke…ever! Smoking causes lots of toxins to enter your body and causes your blood vessels to constrict which impairs circulation. It inhibits your skin’s ability to form collagen and results in dry, saggy skin.
  3. Get your beauty rest and sleep on your back! Cell regeneration occurs at night so it’s critical to get your rest. Most adults function best with 8-9 hours of shut-eye each night but the average person sleeps less than 7. In addition, your sleep position could be permanently etching sleep lines in your face. It’s hard to do at first…but train yourself to sleep on your back to avoid crushing wrinkles into your face.  I’ve found that sleeping with a travel neck pillow helps stabilize my head so I don’t tend to roll over.
  4. Reduce your stress levels. That sallow appearance of an exceptionally stressed out individual is due to our bodies responding by sending blood and nutrients to our vital organs during stressful events and thereby bypassing our skin. The increased cortisol levels reduces the body’s ability to repair and regenerate. Great ways to reduce stress are yoga, meditation, warm bath, massage, long walk, reading, getting a good night’s rest or visiting with a friend (or therapist)!
  5. Eat Healthy Food. Sugar, and refined carbohydrates, will accelerate the aging process while whole foods such as fresh fruits and vegetables will help slow the aging process.
  6. Exercise Regularly. Exercise is good for you for so many reasons! It really helps your skin by increasing circulation which in turn helps all of the nutrients reach your skin. Consistent exercise also reduces stress which will help your skin as well. (See #4)
  7. Just Say No to Two in a Row. Alcohol dehydrates your body and disrupts your sleep cycle. It also dilates small blood vessels and can cause facial flushing, which can become permanent. I’m too old for a hangover! I don’t have time and don’t like to feel badly and ruin the entire next day! My habit of drinking one drink followed by two glasses of water helps keep you hydrated and sober. As a type-1 diabetic this is also a good habit for staying alive!
  8. Find a good skin care regimen and stick with it. It’s so important that you find a skin care regimen that works for your skin type and that works for you! Compliance is important, so be sure you find something that you can consistently use. Look closely in the mirror (without makeup) and then find a skin care product that addresses the specific needs of your skin. I happen to LOVE my skincare and I’m happy to share with anyone that wants to learn more!
  9. Keep your hands off of your face…no picking! If you get a blemish…don’t pick! Not only are you risking bacteria entering your wound, you often drive the bacteria deeper into the skin. It’s best to leave it alone or if you can’t stand it, visit an esthetician for an emergency fix!
  10. Adapt your skin care regimen to the climate (Look for my blog Skin Care Tips for Travel to Different Climates)

The Dangers of Tanning Beds

Now that summer is in full swing, I know many of you are anxious to be sporting that golden tan!  Before you do anything….watch this video!  The visual of the effectiveness of sunscreen was so impactful to me!  And, seeing how much sun damage is lurking under the skin’s surface was frightening!  Please wear sunscreen daily  Every. Single. Day…even if it’s cloudy, even if you’re not going to be outside. The best wrinkle is the one you never get and it’s not what you see but what you don’t see that’s making your skin look dull and lifeless.  Prevention is key so start young.  Start early. But know that it’s never too late to reverse the visible signs of aging.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9BqrSAHbTc

So, maybe you know that the sun isn’t healthy, so a fake tan must be better, right?!  WRONG!  Before you consider the tanning bed, there’s a few things you need to know.

Tanning beds are as dangerous as the sun.  The U.S. Dept of Health and Human Services lists UV Radiation from tanning beds as carcinogens.

  1. The increased risk of melanoma associated with tanning bed use is 59% for people whose first exposure to artificial UV rays in a tanning bed occurred before age 35 years. That risk increases with the number of tanning bed sessions per year. Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, kills one person every 50 minutes.
  2. Dangers of Tanning – Melanoma Foundation

  3. mfne.org/prevent-melanoma/dangers-of-tanning/

Instead of a tan that’s harmful and will age you, why not consider a spray tan or, better yet, a self tanner that’s much more economical?  My favorite dynamic duo is the Essentials Self Tanner from Rodan+Fields and the Microdermabrasion Paste!  This 1-2 combo delivers great results!  It was my #springbreak this year!  Totally saved my lily white skin!

Aging Backwards! Rewind those lines!

Aging Backwards….takes on a new meaning!

My last year in the 40’s was the toughest year for me from a medical perspective. My husband and I took a scuba diving trip down to Mexico for my 49th birthday and when we returned to the States, I started getting sick. I thought it was a terrible migraine that wouldn’t go away but, in actuality, it was the beginning of a health saga.

The first illness was meningitis. I’m so thankful it was viral and not the more dangerous bacterial version. I was released from the hospital the day before my daughter’s high school graduation. I slapped on that happy smile, attended her graduation and then hosted her graduation luncheon for a houseful of guests. Then I snuck upstairs for a nap! It took over a week – close to two, actually –  for the headache and stiff neck to fully subside.

The first fall out from the meningitis came in the form of vision issues. When I came home from the hospital, I needed reading glasses. I thought it was a little too coincidental that I was seeing fine and then I couldn’t see my phone.

LITERALLY THE LETTERS WERE THIS BIG and were still blurry!

It cleared up after a few weeks so I chalked it up to still having some inflammation from the meningitis.

In August, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune illness called Hashimotos. I have struggled with my thyroid for years and finally was referred to an endocrinologist who confirmed that I have this disease. Hashimotos can wreak havoc on your system…causing weight gain and lethargy. I had both of these symptoms, along with several others, but I just powered thru thinking it was how life with four kids was meant to be lived! I was excited to start on some medication that might help budge the scales and restore some of my zapped energy! I was feeling older instead of aging backwards like I wanted.

By mid-October my vision issues returned but this time I was unable to see distance (and the near vision was now perfect, again). This made tennis difficult! My eye doctor gave me some contacts that I could wear for tennis and I wore only one contact the rest of the time. During the next few weeks, I finally started to see the scales moving downward. I was so excited and thankful that the meds had finally kicked in!

I had my physical scheduled for the end of October and when I went in, I was shocked to learn that my Fasting Blood Sugar was over 300! My doctor assumed, because of my age and the need to drop a few pounds, that I was a Type 2 Diabetic. The high sugars made the vision issues make sense but I had been losing weight rapidly the previous week. From the time I saw the nurse to have my blood drawn to the doctor visit a week later, I had lost almost 7 pounds! My vision issues got even whackier and I was wearing my silly reading glasses to see distance! After a series of blood work, it was quickly discovered that I actually had JUVENILE DIABETES! While unusual, it’s not uncommon to be diagnosed later in life. So, now I say that I’m aging backwards since my skincare makes me look younger and now my body thinks it’s a teenager. Too bad I don’t have the body of a teenager!!

I have quickly adapted to the endless finger pricks and multiple daily insulin shots. At the time of this writing, I have already had close to 1,000 finger pricks!

So, what have I learned? First, we ALL have SOMETHING! This is my thing. I had to embrace it and own it. I’m so thankful that I was diagnosed as an adult. That really is the silver lining. Being diagnosed as an adult has major perks. I am past caring what others think. Being different is hard as a child or a young adult but by the time you are in your 40’s and 50’s no one cares! I’ve escaped 50 years of damage to my body and I can eat most anything I want as long as I’m willing to take insulin. I’m trying to make healthy choices but knowing that I CAN eat whatever I want is somehow comforting and let’s me feel in control. However, the INTENSE rise in sugar took a toll on my skin. One of the first signs was sagging skin on my neck. I kid you not. I noticed the neck issues before I recognized the other symptoms as diabetes. So, when you hear that sugar accelerates the aging process…BELIEVE THEM!! I’m so thankful to have the #1 premium anti-aging skincare line in my cabinet!  If you can’t say the same, we need to talk! I am now diligent about rolling nightly with my Amp MD Roller! It’s helping to rewind those lines!

On my 50th birthday, I received my insulin pump.  I’ve worn it for one week and it has already been a HUGE blessing so I guess it really was the perfect thing to receive on my birthday! Tonight, I attended my first JDRF Promise Ball as a T1D.  I am so thankful for the research they have done…exciting things are in the future!  We have a great community here in Tulsa with a lot of support.  There really is a Promise for a future without Juvenile Diabetes!

My life is forever changed but feeling like I’m “aging backwards” makes it a little more fun:)  I have a lot of reasons to stay healthy and helping to cure this disease is one of them!

Skin Care Tips for Travel to Different Climates

skin care tips for travel to different climates

This photo was from the Elk Reserve sleigh ride in Jackson Hole, WY. We were there for the most brutal cold spell in January 2016. These tips saved my skin!!

Living in Oklahoma, our weather changes frequently! Seriously, we can have temperature swings from day to day that would make you dizzy! Changes in climate due to travel, (or Mother Nature!) can wreak havoc on your skin. We spend a lot of time in the mountains in Colorado. We love summer hiking and winter skiing but man, can it dry you out! With Spring Break approaching for many, I thought it would be good to give you some great skin care tips for travel to different climates.

High Altitude Tips:

USE SUNSCREEN even if it’s cloudy. The sun is a lot stronger at higher altitudes and you will burn. For every 3,000 feet in elevation the UV radiation is increased 10-12% so carry it with you in your day pack.

Remember to protect your lips as well. It’s amazingly painful to sunburn your lips and it happens quickly in the mountains!

Add humidity to your living space via a humidifier or an old fashioned pot of boiling water on the stove top! Using nasal saline will help you avoid nosebleeds by keeping the nasal membranes moist.

Adding extra moisturizer, morning and night, will also make a big difference in your skin.

Dry Climates:

Dry climates lead to dry skin! You can avoid this dry climate pitfall but reducing the heat in your shower. I know, a long hot shower is heavenly but it pulls the moisture out of your skin leaving your skin itchy and dry. Take a shorter, cooler shower and add moisturizer while your skin is still slightly damp. This will help lock in some extra moisture.

If you prefer baths over showers, adding a few drops of bath oil will help combat the dry skin.

Regular use of a body microdermabrasion paste or loofah sponge will help stimulate circulation and will remove the excess dead skin cells.

Choose products that contain humectants (such as sodium hyalurante, glycol acid and glycerin) which will attract water and help the skin retain the moisture.

Again, adding humidity (see above) is important.

Tropical Climates: As much as I love the beach, heat and humidity increase oil production and can spell trouble for acne prone skin.

Clay based cleansers work best in the tropics to keep pores clear and to prevent blemishes.

Use an oil free moisturizer on areas that feel dry and tight and remember to reapply sunscreen throughout the day. Milder products will likely feel better on your skin as stronger products tend to sting in hot and humid environments.

And, before you go, you might consider getting a sun-kissed glow the healthy way. The Sunless Tanner from Rodan and Fields is one of my new favorites! It’s lightweight and oil-free it doesn’t turn your skin a funny color.

Bookmark these skin care tips for travel to different climates and travel on! Just be prepared, adjust your skin care routine and your skin will be glowing and beautiful!

The Top 2 Things to Know About Eye Cream

KW-BlogGraphic-Top2EyeCream-1200x630px

Need to minimize those crow’s feet? Can you pack for Europe in the bags under your eyes? GOOD NEWS! Here are the top 2 things to know about eye cream.

I was so excited to stumble across The Beauty Department and their blog about eye cream. If you follow me on Facebook, you know that I am NOT a make up girl! As a matter of fact, I was a Dove soap washer prior to finding Rodan + Fields skincare and I have recently had my makeup applied permanently (tattooed) because it’s just not my forte! My skin has always been so dry that foundation was never an option for me so I guess I just avoided it altogether for a long time. Due to my dryness (and affinity for smiling!), my crow’s feet are my biggest challenge. And, when I’d use eye cream on my crow’s feet, I’d wake up with puffy eyes. Who knew that it was because I wasn’t applying it correctly?!

The Top 2 Things to Know About Eye Cream

#1 – Apparently that stuff can move! When you apply eye cream and head to bed, the heat from your body warms the eye cream and it can spread up to an inch! Knowing where to put your eye cream is key. See our graphic for instructions.

#2 – Another thing I recently learned about eye cream is that quantity is important. Since I was puffy when I used it, I decided that using less was the answer. Wrong! Once I read the Beauty Department blog, and started placing my eye cream in the proper location, I was able to use a lot more product! Now, I use about a pea sized amount on each eye. I divide it between the upper and lower lid and voila!  My eyes look amazing in the morning.

BONUS – Another trick to helping my eyes look rested and more youthful is that I’ve been using the Acute Care product for expression lines from Rodan + Fields. These wrinkle fillers are AH-MAZING! Talk about a viable alternative to a needle! The tag line is “fill a wrinkle while you sleep, no needle required”. Sign me up! This video shows the proper technique for using these “magic strips”. They feel a bit like velcro at first but the product softens as you sleep. You use it 3 times a week for 10 treatments and to receive great results that will last a couple of months. I saw results after my first use! Best news? All of the products purchased from Rodan+Fields come with a 60 day, empty bottle, money back guarantee! If you aren’t satisfied, you can get your money back…no questions asked!

Why Lucky 13 Is My Favorite Number

why lucky 13 is my favorite number

If I told you that Friday the 13th is my lucky day, you’d probably think I’m a nut. I’m not. But I am going to tell you why Lucky 13 is my favorite number.

I was born on Friday the 13th, I graduated from college on my birthday (which was Friday the 13th) and I will turn 50 this year on, you guessed it, Friday the 13th!

I’ve never been superstitious and certainly not about the number 13. It’s obviously a lucky number for me and I spent years on the soccer field with the number 13 emblazoned across my back. My twins will also turn 13 this year so I’m surrounded by the number 13! The only thing that could have made it crazier would be if this were 2013 instead of 2016! Or if I had 13 kids. Any more questions about why Lucky 13 is my favorite number?

I’m a glass half full girl. I love adventure and I can’t wait to make 50 better than 40! So, I’m starting this 2016 focused on healthy eating, exercise and skincare! I figure I can’t control aging (we are all aging, all of the time!) but I can take the best care of me that’s possible so that when 50 hits me mid year, I can confidently seize the moment knowing I’m at my best. I just hope there’s enough time to implement my Best Me plan between now and May 13th!

What are you doing to make 2016 YOUR best year? Here’s a list of what I’ve got brewing for this year of Lucky 13!

1.) Healthier eating – I’m making a concerted effort to add more fruits and veggies to my plate. My friends at Ediblend shared this recipe for a great morning shake and way to get more veggies in my body early in the day!

Rich’s Favorite Shake

16 oz coconut water (or regular water works, too!)

2-3 Medjool Dates (remove the pit)

Fistful of baby greens (I vary which ones I use.  The baby greens are less bitter.)

10 oz of frozen blueberries

10 oz of frozen strawberries

Place items in blender (I use a Vita-Mix) in the order listed! Blend until smooth. This recipe makes several shakes and keeps well in the fridge for a day or two.

2.) Exercise – I’m increasing the number of times I’m on the court playing tennis. I LOVE this sport! It’s great from a social perspective and it’s great exercise. I also do a strength/cardio workout 2-3 times a week…okay, so I’m signed up for 2-3 times a week and I’m working on getting there more consistently. RVVD Fitness is the place I LOVE in my hometown, Tulsa.  They offer cutting edge (aka “killer”) workouts in a group setting but with personalized assessments and goal setting.  I’ve just started a new 8 week challenge. Working on finding my best self…50 WILL be better than 40!

3.) Skincare – Every day. Twice a day! That’s my motto because I know how easy it is to skip and just collapse in bed but I also know that our bodies restore and regenerate at night so a clean face at bedtime is important! So, I now set a reminder on my phone and I pop upstairs and take care of me long before I head to bed! It makes life much simpler and my complexion is much happier!  My new favorite regimen from Rodan+Fields is the Soothe Regimen. I have lots of clients that are finding relief from the eczema, rosacea, psoriasis and sensitive skin, but guess what?! I have super dry skin and this regimen has my skin looking the best EVER!! The difference is AMAZING!!!

If you have any questions or you’d like to learn more, send me a message to kelly@letsfaceit.buzz! I’ll be right here. Waiting on Lucky 13!
